Councillor Inez Berg

Inez Berg grew up in Winnipeg in a family of six. While attending the University of Manitoba for a Bachelor of Arts, she met and married Richard Berg. In 1972, they moved to Ottawa and resided in Sandy Hill. Inez worked as a research assistant in the University of Ottawa's Department of Community Medicine.

In 1975, she and Richard moved to Capital Ward. Their son Dorion was born that year, and daughter Julia in 1977.

Inez became active in community life, helping organize the Glebe Co-operative Playgroup, and early childhood music classes. She also taught at the Playgroup and volunteered with the Glebe Neighbourhood Activities Group (GNAG), which organizes recreational programs at the Glebe Community Centre.

As well as serving on home and school executives, Inez volunteered at Mutchmor Public School, First Avenue Public School and Hopewell Public School. She also enjoyed her time as "Sunny-Owl" with the Brownies and Guides, and as a volunteer in House League hockey at Brewer arena.

A writer, with the Glebe Report community newspaper since 1980, Inez served on its board, and as a staffer. She became its editor in 1987, stepping down in September 1997 to run for City Council.

As a member of the Glebe Community Association since the early '80s, Inez served as an Area Director for 10 years. Her interest in healthy communities led her to co-organize the City Centre coalition earlier this year.

Inez Berg's commitment to her community was recognized with a Whitton Award in 1992, and the Ottawa Centre Canadian Leadership Award in 1995.

As the new, and very busy Coucillor for Capital Ward, she hopes to find time for her family and other interests such as distance cycling, drawing, reading and volleyball.
