Councillor Diane Deans
Southgate
[Ward OT3]

Community Survey!

Diane Deans is the City of Ottawa councillor for Southgate Ward, located east of Bank Street in the city's south end. She was first elected as municipal councillor in 1994 and was returned for a second term by acclamation in November 1997.

Diane's interest in political work evolved at an early age. After earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Guelph in 1980, she joined the Canadian Federation of Students and two years later became its executive director. In that capacity she worked with student groups from various universities across Canada and also spent time in London, England as a participant in an international exchange. Upon completing her term with the Federation, Diane accepted a position on Parliament Hill working as a researcher and media advisor.

During her first term as a city councillor, Diane served on various boards and standing committees and was Chairperson of the Community Services and Operations Committee. She voted to keep property taxes frozen for each of those three years and worked with City staff to further streamline how City Hall conducts its business and to establish new ways of delivering services to the public. At present, Diane serves on the board of City Living, the City of Ottawa's License Committee, Opera Lyra, the Community Services and Operations Committee and is Chairperson of the Policy, Priorities and Budgeting Committee.

She is eager to grapple with the issue of regional governance as Ottawa prepares to downsize to a more efficient form of municipal government. However, she insists that any reform must benefit Ottawa taxpayers and ensure that the City of Ottawa does not pay more for a streamlined municipal government.

In Southgate Ward, Diane will continue working with business and community members on development, safety and quality-of-life issues. Having successfully established Ottawa's first business parks association, a local safety council, a community justice committee, and a library advocacy group (dedicated to improving library services for more than 50,000 residents living in south Ottawa), Diane is committed to representing the concerns of Southgate Ward taxpayers at City Hall and ensuring that the infrastructure needs of the developing neighbourhoods are met.
