Complete our viewer survey

Ron Kolbus , Councillor for Ward OT1 (Britannia-Richmond area) received a BPE (Recreation) and an MEd (Adult education) at the University of British Columbia. Before coming to Ottawa he pursued a number of activities, many of them involving youth and housing. He was Director of a 1200 member Boys and Girls Club (an interest he still maintains), Director of the Youth Services Branch of the Alberta Government, and General Manager - Edmonton Housing Authority.

Ron came to Ottawa in 1978 as General Manager of City of Ottawa Non-Profit Housing Corporation (City Living ) and Member of the City's Committee of Department Heads. He was responsible for administering the City's role in social housing, developed or acquired over 3,000 residential housing units, developed housing for singles, families and special needs groups and assisted non-profit and co-op groups in land acquisition. It was an involvement he feels "really contributed to the community."

After 10 years in commercial real estate, in 1994 Ron returned to the City as a Councillor. He has entered his second term with a plurality of over 75%.

As Councillor for OT1, Ron hopes to encourage community participation in decision-making through his Ward Advisory Council and Youth Advisory Council. He is encouraged by the smooth and satisfactory completion of the Lenester Road reconstruction and the Britannia Storm Sewer project which he would like to see extended into the Belltown neighbourhood. He's interested in traffic calming in Carlingwood and Woodpark and in the duplex-triplex conversion that affects some areas of the Ward. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Britannia Business Association, the Pathway Patrol, and would like to see the continued development of the Queensview industrial area to broaden the tax base. He wants to ensure that seniors get the quality service they deserve and that young people are involved in planning for the community.

Across the City, Ron would like social housing tenants to feel more a part of the overall community. He wants basic City services provided in an efficient, effective and timely manner. He feels that all City planning and development must respect green spaces and that the City must stay on track in balancing the budget and lowering debt.

Ron's committee board membership includes: Chair, Audit Committee; Member and Past Chair, Policy, Priorities and Budgeting Committee; Member, Planning and Economic Development Committee; Member and Past President, City Living Board of Directors; Vice-Chair, City of Ottawa Superannuation Fund; Vice-Chair, Ottawa Hydro Commission; and Board Member, Ottawa Nepean Campsite Authority.

Ron's wife, Carol, is a travel consultant with AMEX Travel. He has two grown children, Joe and Renata, who live out west. He is a keen golfer, skier, baseball and football fan, and looks forward to boating, reading, and relaxing at his cottage.
