Committee Recommendation as amended

 

That Council approve that the City seek to partner with its Business Advisory Committee, the Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation (OCRI), The Ottawa Partnership (TOP), the Regroupement des gens d’affaires (RGA) and labour to conduct a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (S.W.O.T.) analysis to determine who we need to bring to the table (what parts of the private sector, business and labour) to develop a strategy to focus on and amplify on the skills and assets that constitute our comparative advantage for the period at which we emerge from economic slowdown/recession.

BACKGROUND

 

At the 21 October 2008 meeting of the Corporate Services and Economic Development Committee (CSEDC), Councillor R. Chiarelli submitted the following Notice of Motion for consideration by the CSEDC at its meeting of 4 November 2008:
 
That the City seek to partner with our Business Advisory Committee, the Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation (OCRI), The Ottawa Partnership (TOP) and labour to conduct a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (S.W.O.T.) analysis to determine who we need to bring to the table (what parts of the private sector, business and labour) to develop a strategy to focus on and amplify on the skills and assets that constitute our comparative advantage for the period at which we emerge from economic slowdown/recession.

 

 

CONSULTATION

 

This item will be advertised in the local dailies as part of the Public Meeting Advertisement on Friday preceding the Committee meeting.

 

Economic Development Division has begun preparation of a work plan and critical path to ensure that the process of updating the City’s 20/20 Economic Strategy from 2003 considers input from the broadest range of stakeholders.  It will use a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (S.W.O.T.) analysis of Ottawa’s economy to inform stakeholders in the consultation process.

 

 

FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS

 

Economic Development Division has the resources within its 2008 budget to complete this assignment.

In response to a comment from Councillor Bloess, Councillor Chiarelli amended his motion to include the « Regroupement des gens d’affaires (RGA) » in the list of organizations to be included in the partnership.  Committee then voted on the revised motion.
