King Edward Avenue Renewal Project Summary - 2009 and 2010
Phase 1 – Build new Structure
Phase 1 included building a new structure at the north end of King Edward Avenue to replace the existing two structures leading to/from the MacDonald Cartier Bridge.
Detouring
Construction requires closure of the southbound ramp from Sussex Drive to King Edward Avenue until the end of Phase 2 Construction. Detour route provided on Sussex Drive and Boteler Street.
Phase 1 Construction Start – Summer 2005
Anticipated Phase 1 Completion - Spring 2006
Phase 2 – Reconstruction of MacDonald Cartier Bridge/Sussex Drive to St. Patrick Street
Phase 2 involves the reconstruction of King Edward Avenue from the MacDonald Cartier Bridge/Sussex Drive to St. Patrick Street, including:
- Installation of a new watermain
- Sewer re-lining
- Preparation for burial of overhead utilities
- Completion of roadway reconstruction
Detouring
No detouring is required for this phase except for the continued detouring required for closure of the southbound ramp from Sussex Drive to King Edward Avenue (see Phase 1 Construction). Lane closures during off-peak periods will be required to accommodate construction. A minimum of two travel lanes in each direction will be maintained during peak periods.
Phase 2 Construction Start - Summer 2006
Anticipated Construction Completion - Fall 2007

Phase 3 – Reconstruction St. Patrick Street to Rideau Street
Phase 3 involves the reconstruction of King Edward Avenue from St. Patrick Street to Rideau Street, including:
- Installation of a new watermain.
- Sewer replacement.
- Burial of overhead utilities from Boteler to Rideau Street.
- Completion of roadway reconstruction.
Detouring
No detouring is required for Phase 3. Lane closures during off-peak periods will be needed to accommodate construction. A minimum of two travel lanes in each direction will be maintained during peak periods.

Anticipated Construction Completion - Fall 2007
Phase 4 – Reconstruction of King Edward Avenue from Rideau Street to Laurier Avenue
Phase 4 involves the reconstruction of King Edward Avenue from Rideau Street to Laurier Avenue, including:
- Installation of a new watermain.
- Sewer replacement.
- Burial of overhead utilities.
- Completion of roadway reconstruction.
Detouring
No detouring is required Phase 4. Lane closures during off-peak periods will be required to accommodate construction. A minimum of one travel lane in each direction will be maintained during peak periods.
