About the Environmental Strategy

Toward a Sustainable Future

What is the
Environmental Strategy?

Ottawa's Environmental Strategy is a growth management plan that focuses on the responsible management of all aspects of the City's environment. It will set the direction and establish a comprehensive approach to create sound environmental management in City practices and policies.

Daily we have an impact on the environment all around us. The choices that we make today influence the future that we will all share tomorrow. The City of Ottawa is developing a strategic document, the Environmental Strategy, which reflects the need to make choices appropriate for our environment and our future.

The Environmental Strategy works in combination with the other growth management plans to forward the Ottawa 20/20 growth initiative.

The actions that will be proposed in the draft Environmental Strategy are designed so as to develop the City of Ottawa as a city that:

  • develops in harmony with the environment and uses land wisely
  • focuses on walking, cycling and transit ensuring less land lost to roads and parking
  • works to improve the quality of the natural environment
  • limits the levels of noise, air and light pollution
  • protects natural resources and agricultural lands

How does the Environmental Strategy affect me?

The Environmental Strategy describes the preservation of the natural habitats and network of greenspace that we all enjoy. This is the growth management document that focuses on the guiding principle of A Green and Environmentally Sensitive City. This strategy will influence walking and cycling policies as well as address noise, air, water and light pollution issues.

The Environmental Strategy cannot accurately reflect the public vision without your input. The first draft of the Environmental Strategy will go before Council on April 23, 2003. Public consultation on the draft will begin shortly after this date. To express your interest or contribute to this plan, please send us an e-mail with your comments to info@ottawa2020.com. Working together, we can create a sustainable vision for Ottawa's natural environment!

How Can I Get Involved?

There are many ways to get involved in the Environmental Strategy! Consultation on the first draft will take place in the late spring of 2003. To learn more or to send us your comments, please contact:
