Changes to On-street Parking

The City of Ottawa has started street-level work on the segregated bike lane pilot project for Laurier Avenue West with impacts to on-street parking and loading zones. Additional on-street parking will be made available May 1. Parking on Laurier Avenue will be removed as construction progresses.

On-Street Parking

The City will replace the 122 parking spots removed from Laurier Avenue with 124 spots on Gloucester and Nepean streets. Parking spots on Gloucester and Nepean west of Kent Street will be free. Spaces between Kent and Lyon Street are available evenings and weekends only. Pay and Display machines will be installed for parking payment at all other locations.

Loading Zones

There will be several changes to on-street loading zones including:

  • The existing loading zone on the north side of Laurier Avenue just east of Bank Street is relocated to the south side of the road
  • Three new loading zones will be created:
    • South side of Laurier east of Kent
    • North side of Laurier east of Metcalfe
    • North side of Gloucester east of Percy
  • The school bus loading zone in front of the Main Branch of the Ottawa Public Library will remain as is

Taxi zones

The two taxi zones that are currently on Laurier Avenue will continue to operate in the same location just east of Lyon Street across from Minto Place and the Minto Business Centre. The current zones will continue to permit all-day operations for taxi licence holders. Pavement markings will be used to alert cyclists and pedestrians.

Para Transpo

Para Transpo vehicles are permitted to stop in parking, loading and no parking zones along Laurier Avenue. Short duration use of no stopping zones is also allowed if traffic is not obstructed. In the event that no space is available along Laurier Avenue, Para Transpo vehicles are encouraged to stop on the closest cross-street.

  • The loading zone in front of 475 Laurier has been relocated to Bay Street (fronting 475 Laurier)

Work will begin in the next few weeks. The bulk of construction, including resurfacing of the street, will happen after the Ottawa Race Weekend May 28 to 29.

The City‘s intention is to have the segregated bike lanes on Laurier Avenue open by late summer, though this schedule could be affected by the weather.

Additional information will be provided on ottawa.ca/bikelane as the project progresses. Should you have any questions regarding the Laurier Avenue Bike Lane construction, please contact Project Manager Steve Stoddard at 580-2424, ext. 27880 or e-mail at steven.stoddard@ottawa.ca.
