West Transitway Connections

● Terry Fox Drive to Fernbank Road

On February 14, 2007, City Council approved a motion to suspend the work on the East-West Corridor (Orléans-Walkley-Kanata) LRT Environmental Assessment Study (E-W LRT). At the time of suspension, the western section of the E-W LRT had a preferred corridor selected, station locations identified and functional design options for Scotiabank Place largely completed.

In 2008, Council approved an update to the Transportation Master Plan which identifies the west transitway as a BRT system.

The West Transitway Connections is a key component of the recommended interconnected system of rapid transit corridors. The Corridor offers significant opportunities for compact, mixed-used development in the vicinity of stations. The opportunity now exists within the Corridor to protect land in appropriate areas for a transit facility in advance of planned residential and commercial development within growth areas such Kanata and Fernbank. Providing an efficient, reliable and safe transit system at an early stage in the development of emerging Mixed-Use Centres, Employment Areas and Enterprise Areas, will encourage desirable shifts to travel by transit. It is far-sighted to define and protect the corridor and station locations in order to focus transit-oriented development in the appropriate forms at the right locations.

The West Transitway Connections will now be completed as part of a BRT system. As such, previous design decisions based on LRT technology will have to be reviewed to consider issues such as:

• Station design and configuration
• Geometric requirements (such as minimum turning radii and maximum grades)
• Stormwater management
• Grade separations
