C4 Gallery

REQUEST FOR SUBMISSIONS
Deadline: Monday, April 5, 2010, 3 p.m.

The C4 Gallery is a one-of-a-kind mobile cabinet that will travel to community centres across Ottawa for two-month exhibits. The cabinet’s 24 drawers have been specially designed to display small pieces of art submitted by a wide range of artistic talents, from emerging to professional artists. Every two months, the C4 Gallery will be moved to a different community centre with a new set of thought-provoking art pieces tucked inside its drawers. Artwork currently on display is swapped with the incoming art, so that each contributing artist is presented with a piece of art in exchange for his submission to the gallery.

SUBMISSIONS

Due to the temporary and rotational character of the C4 Gallery, it will not only provide a forum for edgy artwork that is site- and time-specific, but it will also become a means for community exchange and a networking exercise. It will connect communities through a swap of physical objects that are rooted in a conceptual relationship to the contributors, their communities and their relationship to the world around them.

This project will generate pride in Ottawa communities increasing a sense of ownership within city neighbourhoods; it will harness cultural identity by engaging the local residents, and contribute to quality of life thorough active participation.

ELIGIBILITY

The request for submissions is open to all residents: artists, children, seniors etc. living within a 150-kilometre radius of the City of Ottawa. Participants must be Canadian citizens, or have landed immigrant status.

SELECTION CRITERIA / GUIDELINES

  • Participants may only submit one (1) artwork/art object to this call for participation.
  • The art object must conform to the size specifications of the Gallery compartments (see renderings below): 8 inches (l) x 5 inches (w) x 4 inches (h), or it will not be displayed.
  • You are limited only by your imagination; artwork can be created, found, assembled, declared.
  • Submissions must be accompanied with an explanation of the art object’s relevance, along with materials/medium, artist(s)’ name and a signed letter of agreement.
  • The submitted artwork should reference in some manner the (contemporary) history of your community, and/or provide a socio-political/personal commentary of your neighbourhood and/or experiences in Ottawa.
  • Artists submitting their artwork must agree/accept as part of their application, via a letter of agreement that their artwork will not be returned. Selected art objects may be exhibited for a period of two months at a particular community centre selected by the City, or in the virtual gallery. The exhibit will rotate via random selection/lottery. The new contributors, selected from the initial call to artists, will receive the object that their artwork replaces in the Gallery.
  • Artists must give copyright permission, via a letter of agreement, to the City of Ottawa to reproduce images of their artwork on the C4 Gallery webpage for non-profit publicity and educational purposes.

SELECTION PROCESS

  • Eligible artworks will be displayed according to random selection/lottery.
  • Submissions will be reviewed to eliminate any illicit or inappropriate content. If any such material is present, the art object and its artist will be disqualified without notification, their submissions discarded.

Note that this gallery is for public use and will be on exhibit in community centres. All art objects must be appropriate for residents big and small.

Community participation is a necessary component to the success of this project. Contributors will not be financially compensated for their submissions and will not receive an exhibition fee. The physical and virtual display of their ‘artwork’ and the exchange/swap of art objects will serve as compensation. We are hoping to inspire a community-based initiative that is rooted in an exchange of artwork outside the formal settings of galleries.

DEADLINE

Submissions must be received by mail or by hand no later than Monday, April 5, 2010 at 3 p.m. (This is NOT a postmark deadline.) Fax or e-mail submissions will not be accepted. Incomplete or late submissions will not be reviewed.
