C4 Gallery

The challenge of connecting art to people has taken a new twist with the City of Ottawa’s latest gallery. The C4 Gallery is a one-of-a-kind mobile cabinet that will travel to community centres across Ottawa for two-month exhibits. At five feet wide and three-and-a-half feet tall, it is similar to the old-fashioned library card catalogues.

But there’s nothing old-fashioned about the C4 gallery, whose four Cs stand for contemporary, conceptual, compartmental, community. The cabinet’s 24 drawers have been specially designed to display small pieces of art submitted by a wide range of artistic talents, from emerging to professional artists. Art submissions simply need to adhere to two criteria: to reflect the character of the artist’s neighbourhood and to fit inside the cabinet’s small 8”x5”x4” drawers.

Every two months, the C4 Gallery will be moved to a different community centre with a new set of thought-provoking art pieces tucked inside its drawers. Artwork currently on display is swapped with the incoming art, so that each contributing artist is presented with a piece of art in exchange for his submission to the gallery.
