The City of Ottawa is encouraging Ottawa residents to join the City in observing Earth Hour. Earth Hour is a global campaign that encourages individuals and businesses to turn off their lights from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 27, 2010 – as a symbolic statement on the need to take action on climate change.

The World Wildlife Fund initiated the global campaign in Sydney, Australia in 2007. This year, organizers hope to reach one billion people in more than 4,000 cities around the world.

Hydro Ottawa, Ottawa Sun / 24 Hours and CTV are major sponsors in Earth Hour Ottawa. Hydro Ottawa will be monitoring the drop of electricity used in Ottawa during the one-hour period. The Ottawa Chamber of Commerce is also a partner in this year’s event. Already, many businesses and institutions have joined the rally, and each day, more residents and businesses are adding their voices to amplify Ottawa’s call to support the need for action on climate change.

Register yourself, your group and/or business. Downloadable materials to help you spread the word to co-workers, neighbours and friends are available at wwf.ca/earthhour.
