Enviro Community

Make a difference for our planet's environment by starting at the community level.

The City of Ottawa has several campaigns and programs that engage the community and provide support of local environmental efforts. There are many ways you and your community group can get involved - adopt a local park or roadway to keep it clean; undertake a cleanup project on city property or in an area in your neighbourhood as part of the Spring and Fall Cleaning the Capital campaigns, cleanup graffiti in your community as part of the Graffiti Management Program, or stop idling your vehicle. To improve Ottawa's air quality, City Council recently adopted an Idling Control By-law.

Anti-idling Campaign and By-law

Vehicle emissions are the single largest source of air pollutants in Ottawa. These pollutants affect the air we breathe and contribute to global warming. Ottawa adopted a new Idling Control By-law that came into effect in September 2007. This effort was supported by a public education campaign. The by-law limits idling to three minutes when the outside temperature is between 5° C and 27°C. Outside this range unoccupied vehicles are subject to the three-minute limit. It’s about health, our environment and saving money!
