Rural Health Program

The Rural Health Program works in partnership with organizations, businesses and individuals in the community to bring public health services and programs to adults and seniors living in the wards of Cumberland, Rideau-Goulbourn (formerly Rideau ward and Goulbourn ward), Osgoode, and West Carleton-March (formerly West Carleton ward). Contact the public health nurse in your ward for more information about the programs and services offered by the Rural Health Program.

The overall goal of the program is to improve the health and well being of adults living in rural Ottawa. Some of its objectives are to:

  1. Increase awareness of the risk factors associated with preventable chronic diseases, communicable diseases and injuries
  2. Promote and support healthy living behaviours
  3. Increase the capacity of individuals to manage chronic illness and maintain independence
  4. Respond to current and emerging rural health and environmental health issues such as West Nile virus, well water safety and emergency preparedness
  5. Increase access to public health services for rural residents
  6. Advocate for services to meet the health needs of rural residents
  7. Link rural residents with health and community services

The Rural Health Program provides the following services:

  • Offers presentations and workshops on a variety of health topics including physical activity, healthy eating, falls prevention, caregiver support, senior’s health, men’s health and women’s health
  • Supports opportunities to be physically active through volunteer-led walking clubs, ViActive exercise classes and active sitting exercise classes as well as the annual Winter Active program
  • Provides support to program partners at community events that promote healthy living behaviours such as Family Fun Days and Community Walks
  • Provides health information and resources in the community through various venues such as health fairs, the agricultural fall fairs, community bulletin boards and monthly articles in various community newspapers
  • Organizes annual mass CPR/AED trainings in each ward
  • Provides support to the annual flu vaccine clinics in each ward
  • Organizes spring and fall well water sample collections in your own community as well as supporting the weekly well water sample collection at rural City of Ottawa Client Service Centres and other facilities

The Rural Health Program is a proud member of the Rural Healthy Living Coalition (formerly Rural Heart Health Coalition), which is part of Partners in Healthy Living Ottawa (formerly Ottawa Heart Beat). The Rural Health Program team acknowledges the contributions of the many volunteers who help run these programs.
