Scented Products in the WorkplaceExposure to scented products can affect people in the workplace. Scented products can include perfume, make-up, shampoo, and deodorant; or products such as air fresheners, and cleaners. Some people report mild irritation while others are incapacitated and/or must give up many of their usual activities to avoid exposure. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety reports that certain odours, even in the smallest amounts, can trigger an attack in allergic and asthmatic individuals, as well as those with other conditions. Some workplaces are raising awareness about sensitivities to scent and providing recommendations on approaches that can be used to deal with this issue at work. Encouraging employees to be considerate of others who may have reactions or sensitivities to scented products, and urging them to use the many unscented products that are available, makes good “scents.” There are posters to print and post in your workplace if you are interested in the 8.5” x 11” format or 11” x 17” format. In addition, here are some sample guidelines to address this issue in your workplace.
