Shopping for One

You are worth the time and energy it takes to prepare nutritious meals. Here are some helpful shopping tips.

  • Shop with a friend and share your food. Divide large packages that are often at a better value.
  • Ask to have large packages of fruit, vegetables and meat broken up in the size that suits your needs.
  • Buy fruit at various stages of ripeness: ripe, medium and unripe. Let the last one ripen at room temperature. Now you will have fresh fruit the whole week!
  • Buy small-sized fresh produce (eg. small lettuce, cabbage, squash).
  • Buy a half a dozen eggs.
  • Take advantage of “family size” or “bulk” meat packages if they are cheaper and if you have freezer space. Repackage at home in meal sized portions; label and freeze.
  • When out of season, buy frozen vegetables in bags and use just what you need.
  • Take advantage of buying in “bulk”. Buy only what you need and save.
  • When pressed for time, try convenience foods (frozen entrées) instead of take out. Lower fat convenience foods (10g fat or less per serving), when eaten occasionally, provide variety and are worth the price.
