Getting Started


In the 1960s, the average number of people in a car per trip was 1.4. By 2003, that number fell to 1.25.
It's easy to get together with neighbours or co-workers and share a ride. To start a carpool at your workplace, apartment building or elsewhere, check out the City of Ottawa's automated ridematching service or follow these four simple steps:
  1. Post a map of the city in a busy place like a lunch room or lobby. Include some paper and pins.
  2. Ask drivers and passengers to write their name and phone number on a piece of paper, and pin it on the map near where they live or work. They should also indicate if they want to be a driver, a passenger, or either.
  3. Post a sign that lets others know they can call drivers and passengers on the board to arrange a carpool.
  4. Get together and form your carpool.
