Tips for Carpoolers

According to the 1996 census, 8.8% of workers in Ottawa-Gatineau were carpool passengers.

Once you've had a chance to get together with a few people who live or work near you, it's time to form your carpool. Start by setting up a meeting, conference call or group e-mail to discuss arrangements such as the following:

  • Who will drive
  • How costs will be shared
  • Pick-up and drop-off times and locations
  • How long to wait if someone is late
  • What to do if someone is sick

It's also a good idea to set some basic ground rules such as:

  • If eating, drinking or smoking will be allowed
  • If the radio will be played, and what type of music or stations
  • If side trips and stops are allowed
  • Seating arrangements
  • Expected car maintenance and cleanliness
