Light Rail Transit (LRT) Technology Forum
Ottawa City Council approved the Transportation Master Plan (TMP) in November 2008, including a vision for achieving an integrated, citywide transit solution to better serve communities across Ottawa. The specific type of technology needed to achieve this vision has yet to be identified.
The City of Ottawa hosted an LRT Technology Forum on June 19 and 20, 2009, bringing together manufacturers, operators and transit experts from across North America to discuss various types of transit systems, best practices and lessons learned, with the objective of identifying optimal rail technology solutions for Ottawa.
This event included presentations from manufacturers, operators and the City as well as discussions with City Councillors, provincial and federal officials and a number of key stakeholders. The June 20 session provided the public an opportunity to participate in roundtable discussions on technology options and state their issues, concerns and preferences. Eight background documents were written to highlight the main criteria involved in technology choice
Conclusion
Following careful deliberation on the various technologies available to power Ottawa's rapid transit network, on November 25, 2009 Ottawa City Council voted to endorse the Light Rail Transit (LRT) option.
